The Atacama Desert is one of the driest and arid places in the whole world. The colors which result when the light reflects off the dunes and mineral rocks are simply stunning. The whole place is covered by a celestial dome which permits astronomical observations of great transparency and cleanness like no other place in the world. One of the world’s biggest astronomical telescopes is located near the area.

The Atacama Desert is located in the North of Chile and is 950 kilometers long, lying between the Andes Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean. The maritime currents favor the blossom of costal life each year when some form of rain falls during the winter. When this occurs one can witness the truly and beautiful phenomenon known as “Desierto Florido” (Flowering Desert) this consists of the explosion of vegetable life in which colorful flowers and plants fill the desert plane in notable proportions due to the rain.

The Atacama Desert is not only desert; there exist innumerable tourist attractions in the area which captivate year after year its many visitors. One of the most visited places is the famous “Valle de la Luna” (Valley of the moon), it consist of a strange series of rock formations and fused sand together with lakes filled with salt which adds color and texture to the surroundings making this place unique in the whole world. Easter Island, named according to its inhabitants “Rapa Nui” O Te Pito Te Henua”, meaning the belly button of the world, its one of the main tourist attractions of Chile this is due to its charming beauty and its mysterious ancestral culture. Its terrain composed of volcanic debris originating from a huge underwater platform 180 kilometers from the surface. Easter Island is located on the eastern side of group of Islands known as Polynesia in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

It was named Rapa Nui by sailors in the XIX century. Its official name Easter Island was given by Dutch Sailors that re-discovered on Easter Sunday, April 5 1972. As time went on Rapa Nui became the name of the island as well of the people who live there.

The remains of this culture have their origins from Polynesian culture; this is represented by the immense statues known as “moais”, which honor their ancestors.
